4 Tips for Buying a Smartphone

Technology April 28, 2016 by Nishitha

Smartphones are a necessity for modern life. They are like little laptops we can hold in our hands to read emails, watch videos, listen to music, play games, check the weather, and do so many other things. Smartphones certainly make our lives easier, so that’s why it’s important to purchase the one that meets your budget and needs the best.

Smartphones have phenomenally risen in popularity and as a result, there are dizzying numbers of brands and versions of smartphones out there in the market. It can be extremely confusing for a first-time buyer to just pick one.

You may encounter many problems like whether to choose an Android or an iPhone, how fast the processor should be, what’s a QWERTY, and how to compare prices for smartphones.

To make things easy, check out the following tips for buying your very first smartphone:

On this page

  • 1. Choose a Processor with Multiple Cores
  • 2. Pick the Operating System Based on Your Needs
  • 3. Consider the Size
  • 4. Compare Prices in Advance

1. Choose a Processor with Multiple Cores

The processor is basically the brain of your smartphone. Just like for laptops, processors with multiple cores can process information fast. You can check the speed of the processor by checking the MHz (megahertz) or GHz (gigahertz) number.

MHz is slower than GHz, and the higher the GHz, the faster the processor will be. Also, you must consider the demands of the phone to make sure that the processor is sufficient to keep things running fast.

2. Pick the Operating System Based on Your Needs

Smartphones have different operating systems just like regular computers. The most widely used of these are Android (by Google), iOS (by Apple and available only on iPhones and iPads), Windows Mobile (from Microsoft), and Blackberry OS (by Research in Motion). Each of these operating systems functions differently, and it’s difficult to decide what’s best above the others.

However, as a regular user, this only affects you in the number of apps and software that you can download. For example, a game designed for iOS will not work on an Android phone. So, know which apps you want to use on your smartphone and decide which operating system will suit you best. Generally speaking, Blackberry and Windows are good for work, and Apple and Google are good for personal use.

3. Consider the Size

Nowadays smartphones come in a variety of sizes and bulkiness. Some have screens as big as a tablet, and others come as thin as an A4 paper. Consider your needs and choose the smartphone size carefully.

If you plan to travel a lot with your smartphone, you might want to pick one that would easily fit in a pocket. If you plan on watching a lot of videos on your smartphone, you might want to buy one with a larger screen.

4. Compare Prices in Advance

Don’t buy a smartphone without comparing prices first. For example, if you want to buy an iPhone 6S, you can compare iPhone price rates offered by different vendors easily online. Weigh on all the options, the warranties offered, and other perks like free headphones before you finalize the deal.

The above tips should give you a general idea of what to look for when buying a smartphone. Don’t buy the first thing you see. Do your research, ask your friends what they like, and read reviews before you spend a considerable amount on a smartphone.
