Dr. Subramanian Swamy’s Contribution to Developments in INDIA

It is amazing to see that India possesses some of the best scholar and highly knowledgeable people who made a wonderful history of the country and are working hard to get its present to reach the top! One such gem of India is Dr. Subramanian Swamy the president of Janata Party, a politician and an economist.

This great personality took birth in a Brahman family in Chennai, India and grew up to study at the Hindu College, University of Delhi from where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree. His next target was a master degree in statistics which he achieved at the Indian Statistics Institute. He then had the good fortune to study at the Harvard University on a Rockefeller scholarship and did his doctorial research with Simon Kuznets and Paul A Samuelson. He also co- authored a path breaking index number theory along with Professor Samuelson. Later the Harvard University honored him with a PhD in Economics.

He got an opportunity to work in the United Nations Secretariat in New York at a position of Assistant Economics Affairs Officer in the year 1963 along with working as a tutor in Lowell House Harvard. As he joined the faculty of Harvard he entered the Department of Economics. Although presently he does not devote all his time to teaching, he teaches in summer sessions as a full rank professor. The huge verity in his career also included teaching in the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi from where he was removed for a short while for reasons unknown but later he was asked to return to it by the Supreme Court of India. He served in this position till the year 1991 after which he resigned to the post and worked as one of the Governors of IIT Delhi. Presently he is the chairman of School of Communication and Management Studies in Kerala. This was all about his career but his contributions to important events of the country require to be recognized here.

He became the news in the 1975 for having opposed the call of emergency in our country India. This act of his required him to take shelter in the underground to escape an arrest by the police. It was during this time that he visited the United States at the advice of Mr. Jayprakash Narayan to probe the Indians there against the emergency. He established the Janata Party along with co founding members and held the position of a President since 1990 along with being a member of the Planning Commission around the same time. He wrote many letters to Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh pleading him to take action against A Raja for his involvement in the 2G scam. When he was faced with disappointment from the Prime Minister he appealed to the Supreme Court to look into the matter.

When asked about this issue he said “I am writing to the prime minister, I am not holding a press conference. The PM has agencies available to him, they can investigate. My job is to bring things to his notice.” Also, “They say I have no proof. Rubbish! As if on other things, they always have proof.He suspected the involvement of Mrs. Sonia Gandhi too in the same 2G scam and mentioned this opinion a number of times in many of his lectures on corruption. His repeated attempts to reveal the 2G scam show his deep and strong desire to curb corruption at any cost and gave us a sense of his immense will power. If we have more people working with similar enthusiasm and determination I’m sure our country will soon reach the zenith!
