Rajasthan Royals defeated Kings XI Punjab by 31 in a high-scoring contest at Jaipur in the fifth match of IPL 2012. Batting first, the Royal scored a mammoth 191 runs with a superb contribution from Ajinkya Rahane who scored 98 runs.
Unfortunately, he could not complete his ton but nonetheless, his superlative effort which included 16 fours and a six ensured that his team reached a huge total. His innings came off just 66 balls which reflected the clean and crisp hitting that was done by him. The rest of the team revolved around his batting with double-digit scores from Rahul Dravid, Brad Hodge, Owais Shah, and K Cooper.
Chasing a target of 191 runs was always going to be an uphill task for the Kings XI Punjab. They needed a solid start upfront to chase this score down. The team got off to a decent start from Adam Gilchrist and Paul Valthatybut neither of them could convert their starts to a big score.
This was the story of the entire team which had lots of small scores but neither of them significant enough to guide the team towards the victory total. Kings XI Punjab’s chase became even more difficult with a superlative bowling effort by Kevon Cooper who bagged 4 wickets.
Captain Gilchrist was one of the top scorers with 27 runs which included 3 boundaries and a six with Mandeep Singh being the surprise package for the Chargers. He scored 34 runs which included 5 boundaries! The writing was on the wall with a score of 191 onboard that things were inclined in favor of the Royals. And they won in style with a margin of close to 30 runs.
