Proteas tame Sri Lanka!ICC Champions trophy, Oct’ 06

South Africa defeated Sri Lanka by a healthy margin in a match which went to the team that persevered and was disciplined in its approach.

The Proteas were sent in to bat by the SriLankan skipper Jayawardene after winning the toss. The Lankans had an early advantage when they got early wickets. But a gritty partnership between Kallis and DeVilliers ensured that the Proteas were steered clear of any danger. The two put on a healthy partnership of 80 runs that laid the foundation of the South African total. This effort was also bolstered in the end by some lusty hitting by the tail enders who finished the innings in grand style.

The SriLankan chase was wobbly from the beginning and the team failed to keep up the momentum due to some fantastic bowling by the South African bowlers. The Lankans could not develop even one good partnership and capitulated.

The match left Sri Lanka with one win and two losses and has made the Champions Trophy that much more interesting!..
