The Kiwis defeated the South Africans in what could be called a one sided contest. South Africans despite winning the toss today, failed to capitalise and let the Kiwis post a challenging total of 195. This was due to a wonderful captain’s knock of 89 by Stephen fleming which ensured that the team reached a respectable total.
Noteworthy is the fact that he scored almost 50% of the team’s runs while the other 10 players ended up scoring 100 runs! The knock also proved why he is one of the highly respected captains in world cricket. For when the odds were stacked heavily against the Kiwis he rose to the ocassion and played an innings of character.
The South Africans though could have done better with the ball, although they put on a decent show. It was a day of spinners, a day when the South African captain too tried his hands at spin as a part time bowler and got two wickets!
Depsite having to chase a total on under 200, the South African batting captiulated meekly. What looked like a deep batting order failed to adjust to the spin, pace and bounce of the wicket. Several batsmen persihed playing a nothing shot!Gibbs, Kemp, Dipennaar and even Kallis failed to apply themseves.
What looked like a good match ended up on the same lines as its predecessors! It was disappointment for the fans who had come to see some swashbuckling cricket particularly from the likes of Gibbs and Astle.
With the Sri Lanka and Pakistan clashing in another round robin match tomorrow hopefully things improve for the tournament and fans!…
